A Week in Pictures 14/03/16

This week was a preeetty good week. For the first week in a long time I feel like I’ve actually got some stuff worth blogging about *high five*!

There’s been eating out again, cocktails again, some new purchases and OMG new hair. Life is goooood.

Taco Tuesday:

This is the best way to spend a Tuesday. Definitely. Went back to Benson Blakes in Bury St Edmunds because it’s closing soon-ish which is seriously depressing, so we needed to get in at least one more Taco Tuesday. And it did not disappoint. Probably ate far too much for a Tuesday evening but it was totes worth it. And 2 cocktails on a school night? I’m so hardcore.

Hello Victoria’s Secret:

Victoria’s Secret has opened in Cambridge. I repeat, Victoria’s Secret has opened in Cambridge. Major excitement went through work on the opening day and we all popped over for a cheeky look in our lunch breaks. I bought some very pretty new underwear (5 for £20 = bargain) and with every purchase you got a free Victoria’s Secret Dog ❤ and a gift card. The gift card is exciting as each one has a minimum of £10 loaded onto it, but it could have up to £500. From the 29th March you go back and they tell you how much is on it. Can’t bloody wait.

Dark Hair Don’t Care:

For years I had light blonde hair, then about a year and a half a go I took a massive step and went a bit darker. And I was extremely scared when I did so. Now I’m so over worrying about my hair colour. I simply rock up and my friends house and she does something. Obviously she doesn’t just go crazy and she is a hair dresser so it’s all fine. But this time I went the darkest I’ve been, and it’s broken up with a few highlights and low lights. And it’s my favourite colour I’ve ever had on my hair.

Thanks to the beauts over at O2, I got a free packet of Propercorn on O2 Priority. Fancy flavours of popcorn have always looked good but I’ve always been a bit unsure. I went for Coconut and Vanilla and OMG it’s delish. Anyone who knows me knowns I’m a huge coconut fan, and this is just perfecto. I’m a changed woman.

Parents Pub Lunch:

Sunday was spent eating cake, then going for a late pub lunch with my parents in a pub in the middle of no-where over-looking a river. Very cute. Can’t wait to go in the summer when you can sit outside. We then went home and I spent the evening sitting in a food coma.

A Week in Pictures 07/03/2016

Life’s hard when you’re trying to save money isn’t it? I wish I could fill this post with a load of exciting things I’ve done over the last week, however I’ve been pretty tame and boring. There’s no fancy meals out or cocktails or champers with the girls. Growing up and being sensible sucks. There is a cheeky new bag though ❤

Work Treats:

Now this just had to be included in this weeks round up because look… It’s ridiculous. We had a stressful day one day, so the next day everyone turned up with treats without realising everyone else had brought treats in. It was unreal. The bad part of it is, most of this went within a day or two 😐 #awks

JUST LOOK AT IT. I’m honestly in love with this bag. I had a voucher for John Lewis so it hasn’t even affected my poor bank balance at all, and basically means I got a free DKNY bag, right?  Probs could have bought some kind of essential item with the voucher instead, but the shopaholic in me won. It IS very practical as It’s a lot bigger than it looks, and I can fit my purse, hair brush, sunglasses, some make-up, my keys and my phone in it comfortably.

Beaut Sunday Weather:

Wasn’t Sunday just lush? The sun was out, there was hardly any breeze which made it feel warm, and not a drop of rain in sight. Perfect weather for a walk and quick stop off in the pub beer garden. But it’s majorly made me desperate for summer. Seriously, where the Pimms and BBQs at???

A Week in Pictures 29/02/16

This ‘Week in Pictures’ is a bit meh. I didn’t get up to as many small things so it’s a tad short and sweet this time round. Sorry guys, life’s not always exciting. I’ll try harder this week *promise*

Tuesday Cinema Date

Tuesday night Pete and I had a little date night to the cinema. We saw Grimsby which I think I liked but I’m sure? I defo laughed. And cringed. But anyway, the highlight was trying out the new Vue chairs and OMG they are amazing. You can almost lay down, have a lap tray for all your food and basically feel like you’re at home in your bedroom. And for dinner I had a Ben & Jerries core sundae which was yum.

Hot Chocolate and Cake

No week is complete without a little trip to a coffee shop, and last weeks lucky winner was Starbucks. You NEED to try their hot chocolate made with coconut milk. It basically tastes like a bounty. Uh huh. Thank me later.

Saturday Night Vibes

Last but definitely not least, Saturday night was spent these beautiful people. We ate food and drank wine and had an all round good evening. And I didn’t even have a wine  headache the next day! So not a single bad thing about the evening.

A Week in Pictures 22/02/16

I’ve been rubbish with this post again this week. I started it, then got distracted with another post. Got my days muddled. Then oh look it’s Thursday and I’m only just writing up what happened last week. My bad.

As per the normal trend it’s pretty much made up of food and eating out, which is great for me and not so great for my beach body.

You may have read my whole post on this already (if you haven’t, you should!), but it really deserves another mention. It was so nice to get try lots of different and fancy foods, and to tell people I’m classy enough to go to a Michelin Star restaurant, obvs. So posh.

Scenic Lunch Break

The last couple of weeks I’ve had to work in Ely a couple of times instead of Cambridge. I used to work in Ely a few years a go so it’s been quite nice to be back, even if it is a lot smaller and quieter. It’s a cute little city famous for it’s Cathedral, and I had a little wander around it’s grounds on one of my lunch breaks to add a bit of culture to the day.

Afternoon Tea

And being in Ely reminded me of some of the pretty little places you can go. So Pete and I went for afternoon tea at Peacocks Tearoom. It’s right by the river and all the crockery is mis-matched so it’s literally the cutest place ever. The lemon and lavender cake was unreal! We may have had our afternoon tea at approx. 11:30am but we were starving! Don’t judge.

New Bag

How cute is this bag!? I got it from Dorothy Perkins and it’s only £28. The handles are a really good length, it’s big enough to fit like everything I need for work in it including my lunch, and it has a pom-pom. Winning. I also think it looks a lot more expensive than a Dorothy Perkins bag which is always a perk.

Pizza with the Girls

The week finished off nicely with a trip to Prezzo with the girls on Sunday evening for a couple of wines, a gossip and; of course, pizza. It may have left me a tad tired for the Monday morning start but it was defo worth it 🙂

Tips to be a Top Saver

As you may or may not know, I’m now trying to be really really good at saving money. I’d love to move out and the sooner that becomes possible the better. I’d say at the moment I’m an average saver. I save a lot more than some of my friends, but nowhere near as much as some others. Completely slap bang in the middle. So from this pay day onwards I’m going to try and seriously up my game, and I’ve come up with several ideas to try and make this happen.

I think working in the finance industry does make me more aware of saving and how much you do actually need to move out etc, so I really need to make a conscious effort to start saving as much as possible because man, life is expensive!

  1. Make a Spreadsheet

I’ve made myself a simple spreadsheet on Excel coz I’m a proper, boring adult. It’s nothing fancy as I literally only know the basics of Excel, so it’s something that anyone can make. Each month I’m gonna put in the exact amount I got paid, and then it’s going to take away from that balance whatever I spend. I’ve made categories such as petrol, insurance etc. Stuff you HAVE to spend your money on each month. Then for clothes/beauty, I’m giving myself an allowance. And then after all these things it tells me how much I have left completely free. So I should be able to budget much better. Hopefully.

2. Cut out the Crap

Basically, stop wasting money on shit. I don’t need a hot drink from Costa, we have a kettle at work. I’m not really starving so I don’t need extra food at lunch. If I pop to the pub on a week night I don’t always need one glass of wine. If I ain’t getting drunk I’ll be having a soft drink. These sound so little but all these things add up and over a month I reckon I can probably save myself a good £50.

3. Eat Out Less

This is defo gonna be the hardest for me. I LOVE a meal out. Since pay-day I’ve already eaten out once and had an afternoon tea. But from now on that’s it, I’m going to be strong. It is so hard as Pete and I love eating out, and so do all my friends. But unless there’s an actual reason I ‘m going to turn down any offers. Once a month should do just fine.

4. Everything in One Go

By  this I mean, try and get everything that HAS to come out of your account to come out on your actual pay day, or as close to it as possible. I move a certain amount of money straight into my savings as soon as I get paid. Give my parents their rent money. Fill up my car with petrol. The list goes on. I’m slowly arranging for bills to come out the day after my pay day now instead of random days in the month. You may have to do this as and when you renew things (such as when your phone contract runs out) to avoid any admin charges. It means what your left with is basically good to use.

5. Be Strict

I am getting a lot better at this, but I need to actually think things through before buying them. No impulsive clothes buys! I’m really going to try and not buy something when I first see it, and then if I still want it after around a week then I’ll get it.

6. Bring Back the Piggy Bank

I’m going to be chucking any loose change into my piggy back and every couple of months I’ll empty it and pay it straight into my savings. Again, this is a really small step but every little helps, and combined with everything else it should start making a huge difference!

7. Learn to Say No

I’m seriously terrible for getting FOMO. I hate the thought that everyone’s out doing something and I’m not. And I also really dislike having to say no to things. But I need to learn that if I don’t go to every trip to the pub, or every night out, or every meal out, that my friends aren’t going to stop being my friends or hate me for it. If other people say no it’s fine, so it’s fine for me to say no as well sometimes. A night in with  my colouring book is just as good sometimes. And also a major sign of getting old 😐 brill!

My First Michelin Star Experience

On Wednesday I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to go for a meal at Michelin Star restaurant Alimentum, Cambridge, with work. For me, this was a bit of a big treat as I’ve never eaten in a Michelin Star before. I’ve been to a couple of places with rosettes, but never a star.

I have to say I was a tad apprehensive before going as I’d seen the menu and it was slightly out of my comfort zone. Eel? Oysters? Seriously?

I can be a bit of a fussy eater. I like my steak well done and don’t normally like fish much at all. So yeah. How am I gonna get though putting all that in my mouth? Can’t exactly sit at the table holding my nose now can I?

But I was very pleasantly surprised!

We had 7 courses plus a couple of appetisers and chocolates to finish. And I ate and enjoyed basically everything. You go girl!

First off we had squid ink crackers which were topped with something fishy but I can’t remember what… But yeah. So far so good. Can’t complain at all.

Our first proper course was the eel. When it arrived it looked so pretty on the plate and not anything like how I imagined it. The picture I’d painted in my head was similar to jellied eels and I was really worried about trying it. But it barely tasted fishy at all, and this ended up being my favourite savoury course of the evening.

Next up was quail. I have actually had quail before so I knew this one would be fine. And I wasn’t disappointed – very yummy.

We then had halibut and this was probably my least favourite course. I didn’t dislike anything but it just didn’t quite work for me. There was a fried oyster on the side which actually my favourite part of this dish. I’m being so surprised by my taste buds! I just wasn’t keen on the flavour of the sauce I think. It was still nice just quite as up there as the other courses.

Last of the savoury dishes, we had beef in red wine sauce. Beef tasted lovely and the sauce and mash were so good. Very strong flavours. There was, however, a snail with this one as well and I’m afraid I did chicken out here. My bad! I just couldn’t do it. I think I let my mind run away with me. But it was only small so didn’t ruin the rest of the dish at all!

Now… Desserts!

Apple crumble. This. Was. Unreal. So delicious, had a hint of cinnamon to it as well. I could have eaten this 100 times over.

BBQ Orange. I’m still not 100% what everything on this dish was, but it was all very tasty. There was a solid orange cream, licorice sorbet and some sprinkled oats/flapjack. Liked it all.

We then had a chocolate gateaux with passion fruit sorbet and my god. That sorbet. I’d like to buy it in bulk!

We finished off with a variety of chocolates and hot drinks.

All in all, was a lovely meal and very exciting to try lots of new things. The restaurant itself was very chic and well decorated, but without having too much of a pretentious feel which I half expected. We were in a room as opposed to the actual restaurant but we did walk through and stand around the bar area. In the room we were in you could watch what the chef’s were doing through a window which was a nice touch.

If someone would like to take me again… That’d be great!

A Week in Pictures 15th Feb 16

There’s a slight theme to this weeks ‘Week in Pictures’. I know food usually features fairly heavily in my weekly round-up but this last week there was just so much food. So much that one meal out isn’t even in here because I was too hungry to even think about photographing it. Someone needs to ban me from eating out, I actually think I have a problem.

Lol got at least 2 meals out this week, whatya gonna do?

Did a couple of other things, but yeah, my week basically in food:

Indian with an Indian:

One of my best friends moved to London last year, but this week she was back so we met up and did our favourite thing other than drinking… eating. (May have had a glass of wine each too, but that’s pretty tame for us!)

Gluten Free Pho’:

My friend Charlie met me after work one evening and she’s coeliac so eating out can be quite difficult for her, but we stumbled across this new Vietnamese restaurant in Cambridge and we LOVED it. She could eat everything on the menu except for one dessert, and it was all so delish. It was my first experience to Vietnamese food too and I didn’t really know what to expect, but was very pleased with our discovery.

Ray Bans First Appearance:

When I went to Vienna for my birthday in November I bought a pair of Ray Bans in the airport, but since I bought them it hasn’t been sunny once so I haven’t had a chance to wear them. So was a tad excited when I was FINALLY able to. Sad, I know.

New Colouring Pens:

Ha. I’m such a child. But I got new pens for my colouring book! I’ve been using pencils as my book has quite large pictures to colour but there are some really swirly pictures too, so I bought some pens. God I sound old. Moving on…

Girls Night:

Redeeming myself slightly here, I got drunk on Saturday. We’d had this girls night planned for some time and it didn’t disappoint. We started off quietly in a bar drinking wine and gossiping, we then got a tad loud and started speaking to random people on the table next to us. Then oh, next thing we know it’s 2am and we’re doing shots in the club. Standard.

Recovery Nandos:

Best thing to do after a night drinking? A recovery nandos, followed by cinema with the boyf. Life’s good.
